BRISTOL COUNTY, MA – July 14, 2025 — Authorities in Massachusetts have confirmed the deaths of nine residents following a devastating fire that engulfed the Gabriel House Assisted Living Residence on Sunday, July 12, 2025. The fire broke out around 9:30 p.m., with nearly 70 residents inside the building at the time. Though the flames were mostly confined to one wing of the facility, over 30 people were hospitalized, and at least one is still in critical condition.

On Monday, several victims were identified by the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office, including 64-year-old Rui Albernaz, 61-year-old Ronald Codega, 69-year-old Margaret Duddy, 78-year-old Robert King, 71-year-old Kim Mackin, 78-year-old Richard Rochon, and 86-year-old Eleanor Willett. The identities of two additional victims, a 70-year-old woman and a 77-year-old man, have not been publicly released pending family notification.

The Victims: Loved Ones Remembered

The fire, which devastated the Gabriel House Assisted Living Residence, has left families and the community grieving the loss of their loved ones. Among those who passed were Eleanor Willett, Richard Rochon, and Kim Mackin, each remembered fondly by their families.

Holly Mallowes, the granddaughter of Eleanor Willett, shared with NBC Boston that her grandmother was the “rock of the family.” Mallowes expressed concern over the final moments of Willett’s life, hoping she passed peacefully from smoke inhalation rather than suffering.

Breonna Cestodio, the niece of Richard Rochon, a Vietnam War veteran, described her uncle as a proud veteran and an expert marksman. She noted how much he enjoyed family visits, especially those from his niece and nephew.

Austin Mackin, the nephew of Kim Mackin, praised his aunt, calling her “a gift beyond words.” He shared that Kim was a highly talented musician and would be deeply missed by her family.

The Fire: A Devastating Incident at Gabriel House

The fire at Gabriel House Assisted Living Residence broke out late on Sunday evening, catching many residents off guard. Lorraine Ferrara, one of the survivors, recalled her terrifying experience to The Associated Press. Ferrara was woken by a neighbor banging on her door and tried to flee through the hallway. However, she was forced back into her room by the thick smoke and the sprinkler system, which was spraying hot water.

Ferrara was able to open a window and scream for help. A firefighter eventually shattered the glass and carried her down a ladder to safety. Ferrara shared her feelings of desperation, saying:

“I really thought I was going to die. The situation felt so hopeless in those moments.”

The fire caused significant smoke damage to the facility, and firefighters had to rescue dozens of residents from the building, many of them using ladders. Over 30 individuals were taken to hospitals, and some are still being treated for their injuries.

Investigation: Authorities Seek Cause of Fatal Blaze

The exact cause of the fire remains under investigation. Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey expressed her sorrow over the incident, calling it a “heartbreaking tragedy”. She confirmed that a full-scale investigation is underway to determine the cause of the deadly fire.

“We are all praying for those who lost loved ones and for the full recovery of those who were injured,” Governor Healey said in a public statement.

The Macon County Sheriff’s Office, along with state fire marshals and local law enforcement agencies, is leading the investigation into the incident. Authorities are working to piece together a timeline of events, identify any potential safety failures, and determine whether there were any factors, such as electrical malfunctions, human error, or structural issues, that may have contributed to the fire.

Community Impact: Mourning the Loss of Residents

The tragic deaths at Gabriel House have left the community of Warrensburg in deep mourning. The facility, which had been home to nearly 70 residents, is known for providing quality care and a sense of community for its residents. This incident has left many in shock, and local residents are expressing their condolences and support for the families of those affected.

Fire Safety Concerns: Call for Stricter Regulations

The fire has also sparked concerns about fire safety in assisted living facilities and other similar care environments. Some advocates are calling for stricter regulations on fire safety, particularly in older buildings that may not be fully equipped with modern fire prevention systems.

“This tragedy highlights the need for better fire safety measures in assisted living facilities, especially those housing vulnerable populations,” said Janet Turner, a fire safety advocate. “We need to ensure that these facilities are properly equipped and prepared to prevent and respond to such disasters.”

Ongoing Efforts and Public Support

As the investigation continues and the families of the victims mourn their loss, the Gabriel House Assisted Living Residence has pledged to work closely with investigators and provide support to the families of those affected.

In the meantime, the community is rallying around the survivors and the families of the victims, offering both emotional support and fundraising efforts to help cover funeral costs and medical expenses for the injured.
