Edward Amankwah Tinley Park IL: It is with profound sadness that we announce the unexpected passing of Edward Amankwah, a beloved member of the Indiana State University community and a student-athlete on the Sycamore football team. He was 22 years old.
A redshirt senior defensive back from Tinley Park, Illinois, Edward was pursuing his graduate degree at Indiana State after earning his bachelor’s degree in athletic training. He was preparing to enter his final season with the Sycamores and was admired for his leadership, character, and unwavering positivity—both on and off the field.
“We’re heartbroken over Edward’s passing, and our hearts go out to the Amankwah family and all of his loved ones,” said Head Coach Curt Mallory. “Edward was a remarkable young man who brought light into every room. His presence left a lasting impact on his teammates, our coaching staff, and everyone fortunate enough to know him.”
Indiana State University President Mike Godard echoed those sentiments, noting Edward’s embodiment of the university’s values.
“Edward represented the very best of our Sycamore Family—resilient, kind, and full of promise,” Godard said. “His sudden passing leaves a deep void in our community. At Indiana State, we stand together in grief, supporting one another and honoring the lives of those we’ve lost.”
Athletic Director Nathan Christensen also shared his condolences: “Edward was more than a student-athlete. He was a friend, a leader, and a deeply valued member of our athletics department. He carried himself with humility, integrity, and heart. We are better for having had him among us.”
Edward was a 2021 graduate of Lincoln-Way East High School, where he played linebacker for the football team and was remembered by his coaches and classmates as an incredible teammate and a beautiful soul.
Although Edward remained an active and committed member of the football program, the circumstances of his passing were unrelated to athletic activity. Out of respect for the family’s privacy, no further details will be shared at this time.
